Speech essay on Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday – 12th February
Today we have come to celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday through a cultural event in school. The teachers encouraged us to arrange the program in remembrance of Abraham Lincoln as an important American leader. In the beginning of the event, I am going to share a small speech on the significance of celebrating Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.
Abraham Lincoln was born to poor pioneers Thomas and Nancy Lincoln on 12th February, 1809. The financial crunch compelled him to start earning from a tender age. After completing the education, Lincoln started practicing as a lawyer in Springfield. Abraham Lincoln joined the Whig Party with a vision of controlling the practice of slavery and expanding commercial sector of United States. Later, he joined New Republican Party and was invited to stand for the election of presidential candidate in 1860. Abraham Lincoln got victory and was elected as 16th president of United States in 1861. Lincoln’s clear view about suppressing slavery created crisis among seven southern states who formed Confederate States of America separately. However, Lincoln vowed to restrict slavery and to protect Union territory. Lincoln made the declaration of Emancipating Proclamation to release slaves of Confederate states which resulted in breaking out civil war in 1861. The selection of supreme commanders and application of intrigue tactics enabled Union territory to win the war in 1865. The four years long battle took lives of more than 6,00,000 Americans. Lincoln was assassinated by one of the followers of Confederacy named John Wilkes Booth within a week after the victory of war.
The celebration of Lincoln’s birthday is done by performing wreath-laying ceremonies at his birthplace in Kentucky. Lincoln’s memorial was established in Washington as a part of his birthday celebration. The President of United States lays a wreath to pay tribute to the deceased president. The Lincoln Birthday National Commemorative Committee conducts events along with Military Order of Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) to make people aware of Lincoln’s contribution in American history. The U.S.Mint has launched four commemorative coins that showcase distinct stages of Lincon’s lives. The African-American Communities started promoting Black History Month to celebrate birthdays of Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. The U.S Federal Government has renamed ‘President’s Day’ as ‘Washington and Lincoln’s Day’ to mark Lincoln’s birthday officially.
