The Golden Seed |
Sit in a group, read the story and discuss the given questions.
a.) Have you ever taken care of any animal? How did you feel?
Ans. Yes, I have taken care of a stray cat once. I felt very happy when I took care of the stray cat.
b.) Why do you think Ziggy hurt the bat?
Ans. Ziggy hurt the bat because he was greedy to get more gold. He thought he would also get the magical pumpkin filled with gold seeds if he took care of a bat like his cousin Sonam. So, he hurt the bat so that he can feed and take care of it in return for the pumpkin.
Talk about the following people in the story: Sonam, Ziggy and the child who stopped hurting ants.
Ans. Sonam – Sonam was a very kind and generous boy. He was very helpful towards animals and took care of them lovingly. He did not expect anything in return for his care. He helped the bat become healthy, and was rewarded by the bat.
Ziggy – Ziggy was a greedy and jealous boy. He wanted to have more gold than his cousin. Due to this he hurt a bat to receive gold. Unlike Sonam, Ziggy did not care for the bat without a motive. He was greedy for gold but got punished with a hungry dragon instead.
d.) If you found a pumpkin with gold nuggets, what would you do?
Ans. If I ever found a pumpkin with gold nuggets, I would be very excited. I would tell my parents and friends about the pumpkin. I would store the gold nuggets safely.
e.) Why do you think the ant left its breadcrumb on the child’s desk?
Ans. The ant left its breadcrumb on the child’s desk to thank him for not hurting the ant and its family that day at lunch by throwing sand on them.
f.) Why do you think the boy felt that the breadcrumb was special?
Ans. The boy felt that the breadcrumb was special as the ant had gifted it to him as a thank you. Since the boy had not hurt the ant at lunch like he did usually, he felt that the ant must have given him a gift, like the bat gifted Sonam for his care.
g.) Like the boy in the story, do you also often think about kindness and goodness to animals?
Ans. Yes, I also often think about kindness and goodness to animals like the boy in the story. I think being kind to animals is very good. We must always be kind to animals.
h.) Many people do good just to get something or out of fear. For instance, they help their friends because
the teacher will praise them. They do their homework because Amala scolds them. Is this good? Think about it
and discuss with your group.
Ans. No, doing good just to get something or out of fear is not good. One should do good deeds without any greed or fear. Doing good things makes us good human beings and our life also becomes happy and fulfilling.
2,) Let’s write
a.) Describe the storyteller.
Ans. The storyteller was an old man. His white hair was braided around his head. He wore turquoise in his ears.
b.) What did Sonam do when he saw that the bat was alive?
Ans. When Sonam saw that the bat was alive, he wrapped it in his sweater and took it home to help it get better.
c.) Do you think Ziggy was greedy for more gold? Why?
Ans. Yes, Ziggy was greedy for more gold. This is because he became very jealous when he heard Sonam’s news, even though he already had lots of gold. He also hurt a bat in order to gain the golden seed like Sonam did after nursing the bat to health.
3.) Discuss and write
Look at the pictures given below and tell your partner how you will help in each situation. Then, write a paragraph of 4-5 sentences for each picture in your exercise book.
Ans. In the picture, a puppy is hurt and dirty. It is sitting in a puddle of water. I would help the puppy by taking it out of the puddle and bringing it home. I will bathe it and put medicine on his injuries. Then I will feed the puppy lots of food.
Ans. In the picture, the plant in the pot has almost dried up due to lack of water. I will help by watering the plant regularly. I will also keep it in sufficient sunlight so that it gets enough nutrients.

Ans. In this picture, the fish has fallen outside the tank. The fish looks like it is in pain due to the lack of water. I will help by putting the fish back in the tank of water.
4.) In the class role play, Binay played the role of the dragon. He wrote a conversation between Ziggy and the dragon.
But in each sentence of the dialogue, he has left out one important punctuation mark. Correct the mistakes and
rewrite the conversation.
Ziggy: Who are you
Binay: I am the dragon of the pumpkin
Ziggy: what do you want?
Binay (shouting): I am hungry I want food, lots of food.
Ziggy (scared): Hmm ok. I will give you food what do you want?
Binay: Now, bring me two eggs a jug of milk and a chocolate cake.
How do punctuation marks help us to read and understand what we write? Think, and talk about it with your class!
Ans.
Ziggy: Who are you?
Binay: I am the dragon of the pumpkin.
Ziggy: What do you want?
Binay (shouting): I am hungry. I want food, lots of food.
Ziggy (scared): Hmm, ok. I will give you food. What do you want?
Binay: Now, bring me two eggs, a jug of milk and a chocolate cake.
Punctuation marks help us to read and understand what we write easily. Punctuation marks express different expressions like questions (?), surprise or strong emotion(!), etc. Punctuation marks like the comma (,) and period (.) help us in understanding pauses and the duration of a pause in sentences. Without punctuation marks we would not be able to understand what message a sentence is trying to give us.
