NCERT Class 6 English Grammar The Sentence: An essay is typically a condensed piece of writing that presents the author’s point of view or story.
A sentence is made up of a number of words that combine together to convey meaning.
The words in a sentence are written in a logical or meaningful order.
A capital letter is used to begin each new sentence.
Punctuation is used to mark the end of a sentence. It includes full stops (.), question marks (?), and exclamation marks (!).
Example– Leena is a smart girl. She always comes first in class.

Types of Sentences
- Assertive / Declarative Sentences (Statement) (.)
- Interrogative Sentences (Question) (?)
- Imperative Sentences (Command) (!)
- Exclamatory Sentences (Exclamation) (!)
- Operative Sentences
1) Assertive / Declarative Sentences (Statement) (.)
Assertive / Declarative Sentences tell you something. They provide information. And explains one or more facts.
These are the sentences that are used the most frequently in daily life.
They typically end with a full stop.
It can also be a positive or negative sentence.
An Assertive Sentence that confirms a fact etc. is called a Positive (Affirmative) sentence.
An Assertive sentence that denies the fact, idea, etc. is called a negative sentence.
1.) Affirmative Sentence that shows Action
Sahil played at a cricket tournament.
2.) Negative Sentence that shows Action
Leena did not kill the lion.
3.) Affirmative Sentence that shows Facts
Modeling is a career for both men and women.
4.) Negative Sentence that shows Facts
There is no life on mars.
5.) Affirmative Sentence that shows Happening
Indian women’s literacy rates are increasing.
6.) Negative sentence that shows Happening
The storm in the river did not blow away the roof of the hut.
2) Interrogative Sentences (Question) (?)
Interrogative Sentences ask you direct questions.
Interrogative Sentences ask for information or inquiries
They always end with a question mark.
They can be categorized into two types
- Simple Question – These questions begin with verbs and ask direct questions or enquire about something.
Examples –
Does she like Apples?
Will you come to the picnic?
Can you help Radha in the kitchen?
- Wh Type Questions
These Questions begin with Wh words like WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, HOW, HOW MUCH, HOW LONG, etc
Examples-
What are you waiting for?
How long is a Superman movie?
How much money do you spend on car repair?
Where did you find this book?
Why did you not complete your homework?
3) Imperative Sentences (Command) (!)
Sentences with imperatives instruct you to do something, give you instructions to do something, or request someone to do something.
Example-
Please help me in the kitchen (Express Help)
Stop! Wait there. (Order)
Plant more trees and save a life. (Advice)
Take care of animals and plants (Advice)
4) Exclamatory Sentences (Exclamation) (!)
A phrase or sentence that conveys sudden or intense feelings or emotions like joy, sorrow, anger, surprise, wonder, attention etc.
The phrase or sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with an exclamation point.
Example-
- The sentence that shows joy and victory
Aha! what a victory
- The sentence that shows joy
Hurrah! We won the match.
- The sentence that shows surprise or wonder
Oh! You are the one who won the beauty contest.
- The sentence that shows the praise.
Wow! You are beautiful and smart.
- The sentence that shows
Look! Don’t talk to unknown people.
5) Operative Sentences Or Greetings
Operative Sentences convey the wish, desire, prayer,and blessings.
Example-
- The sentence that shows the prayer
May God bless you with fast recovery and good health
- The sentence that shows blessings
May you get whatever you desire.
- The sentence that shows the wish
