One whale shark was as long as 18 m. Just think how long that is – almost 12 children of your size standing one on top of the other! And guess what it weighed? Well, much, much more than what 12 of you together weigh! Its weight was about 16000 kg!
About how many kilograms do you weigh? __________
Ans. 13 kgs.
So 12 children like you put together will weigh about _______ kg.
Ans. 12 x 13 = 156 kgs.
About how much more does the whale shark weigh than 12 children like you put together? __________
Ans. 16000 kgs – 156 kgs
= 15844 kgs

These log boats do not go very far. If the wind is helpful, they travel about 4 km in one hour. Guess how far you can go in one hour if you walk fast.
Ans. 8 Km.
How long will they take to go a distance of 10 km?
Ans. 10 km / 4 km
= 2.5 hour.

Some boats have motors and go further into the sea. Since they go far out they can catch more fish. These boats travel faster, at the speed of about 20 km in one hour.
How far would the motor boats go in three and a half hours?
Ans. Speed = 20 km/hr
Time = ½ hour
Distance = Speed x Time
= 20 km/hr x ½ hour
= 10 km.
How much time will they take to go 85 km?
Ans. Distance = 85 km
Speed = 20 km/her
Time = Distance / Speed
= 85 km / 20 km/hour
= 4.25 hour
= 4 hour 15 minutes

In one trip the log boat brings about 20 kg of fish. But other types of boats bring a bigger catch as given in the table. The table also shows the speed of each type of boat, which is how far each boat goes in one hour. Look at the table and calculate —
Type of boat |
Catch of fish in one trip (in kg) | Speed of the boat (how far it goes in one hour) |
Log boat | 20 |
4 km per hour |
Long tail boat |
600 | 12 km per hour |
Motor boat | 800 |
20 km per hour |
Machine boat |
6000 |
22 km per hour |
a) About how much fish in all will each type of boat bring in seven trips?
Ans. In one trip the log boat brings about 20 kg of fish
In 7 trips it will bring = 20 kg x 7
= 140 kgs
In one trip Long tail boat brings 600 kgs
In 7 trips it will bring = 600 kgs x 7
= 4200 kgs
In one trip motor boat brings 800 kgs.
In 7 trips it will bring = 800 kgs x 7
= 5600 kgs.
In one trip Machine boat brings = 6000 kgs
In 7 trips it can bring = 6000 kgs x 7
= 42000 kgs.
b) About how far can a motor boat go in six hours?
Ans. Speed = 20 km/hr
Time = 6 hour
Distance = Speed x Time
= 20 km / hr x 6 hour
= 120 km
c) If a long tail boat has to travel 60 km how long will it take?
Ans. Distance = 60 km
Speed = 12 km/hour
Time = Distance / Speed
= 60 km / 12 km/hr
= 5 hour

Mini — ‘‘Come here! Come here! Take sardines at ` 40 a kg’’.
Gracy — ‘‘Never so cheap! Get sword-fish for ` 60 a kg’’.
Floramma sells prawns for ` 150 a kg.
Karuthamma sells squid for ` 50 a kg.
Look, Fazila can hardly carry this big kingfish! She says, ‘‘This fish weighs 8 kg. I will sell the whole for ` 1200’’.
1) At what price per kg did Fazila sell the kingfish?
Ans. Fazilla sold 8 kgs of fish for Rs. 1200
Therefore, Per kg did she sold = 1200 / 8
= Rs. 150
2) Floramma has sold 10 kg prawns today. How much money did she get for that?
Ans. Floramma sold one kg of fish = Rs. 150
Therefore, She got by selling 10 kg of prawns = 150 x 10
= Rs. 1500
3) Gracy sold 6 kg sword fish. Mini has earned as much money as Gracy. How many kg of sardines did Mini sell?
Ans. Gracy sold per kg of fish – Rs. 60
She sold total 6 kgs of fish.
Total money earned by = Rs. 60 x 6
= Rs. 360
Question told, Mini has earned as much money as Gracy.
So, Total earning of Mini = Rs. 360
Each kg of Sardines did she sell – Rs. 40
Therefore, Total kg of sardines did Mini sell = Rs. 360 / Rs. 40
= 9 kgs.
4) Basheer has Rs. 100. He spends one-fourth of the money on squid and another three-fourth on prawns.
a.) How many kilograms of squid did he buy?
Ans, Basheer has Rs. 100/-
He spend on squid = 100 x 1/4
= Rs. 25
Per kg of squid fish price Rs. 50.
Therefore, He bought = 25/50
= ½ kg
b.) How many kilograms of prawns did he buy?
Basheer has Rs. 100/-
He spend on squid = 100 x ¾
= Rs. 75
Per kg of prawns fish price Rs. 150.
Therefore, he bought = 75/150
= ½ kgs.

The meeting of the Meenkar Bank has just begun. Fazila is the president. Twenty fisherwomen have made their own bank. Each saves Rs. 25 every month and puts it in the bank.
How much money does the group collect each month?
Ans. The group collected in each month = Rs. 25 x 20
= Rs. 500
How much money will be collected in ten years?
Ans. In one month the group collected Rs. 500
Therefore, in one year they collected = Rs. 500 x 12
= Rs. 6000
On ten year, they collected = Rs. 6000 x 10
= Rs. 60000

Gracy needs money to buy a net. Jhansi and her sister want to buy a log boat. So they take a loan from their bank. They will return it with interest.
a) Gracy took a loan of Rs. 4000 to buy a net. She paid back Rs. 345 every month for one year. How much money did she pay back to the Bank?
Ans. Gracy paid back to the bank = Rs. 345 x 12
= Rs. 4140
b) Jhansi and her sister took a loan of Rs. 21,000 to buy a log boat. They paid back a total of Rs. 23,520 in one year. How much did they pay back every month?
Ans. Jhansi and her sister paid back in one year = Rs. 23520
Therefore, they paid back in each month = Rs. 23520 ÷ 12
= Rs. 1960

Total cost to set up the factory = ________
Bore well for fresh water – Rs. 3000 x 1 = Rs. 3000/-
Bamboo rack for fish drying – Rs. 2000 x 20 = Rs. 40,000/-
Cement tank – Rs. 1000 x 4 = Rs. 4000
Tray and knife – Rs. 300 x 20 = Rs. 6000
Bucket – Rs. 75 x 20 = 1500
Total cost = 3000 + 40000 + 4000 + 6000 + 1500
= Rs. 54,500/-
When fresh fish is dried it becomes 1/3 of its weight.
In one month they plan to dry 6000 kg of fresh fish.
How much dried fish will they get in a month? ________
Ans. They will get 6000 x 1/3
= 2000 kg.
Page 14
Floramma — Let us first calculate for 6 kg of fresh fish.
We buy fresh fish for |
Rs. 15 per kg |
We sell dried fish for |
Rs. 70 per kg |
We dry 6 kg fresh fish to get 2 kg dried fish
For 6 kg fresh fish we have to pay 6 × 15 = 90
We will sell 2 kg dried fish and get 2 × 70 = 420
So if we dry 6 kg fresh fish we will earn 420 _ 90 = 330
But if we dry 6000 kg we can earn 2000 × 1000 in one month!
Page 15
Jhansi — I found that for 6000 kg fish we would need 1500 kg salt every month! Its price is Rs. 2 per kg. Monthly costs:
a) Salt 1500 × 2 = ____
Ans. 3000
b) Packing and bus charges = 3000
So the total monthly cost of drying, packing and bus charges = 2000 + 3000 + 3000
= Rs. 8000
