Isobar
Such atom of different elements which have different atomic number but same mass number is called isobar.
The word isobar come from Greek that means Iso- means same and bar- means weight.
As they have different atomic number they contain different Number of protons as well as electron. Further they have same mass number but different number of protons number of neutron present in them is also different.
- Isobar of Calcium , argon , sulphur, potassium, and chlorine:
These atom have different atomic number but same mass number. Calcium-4020Ca, Argon- 4018Ar, Sulphur- 4016S, Potassium-4019Kand Chlorine- 4017Cl .
Calcium- 4020Ca :
Calcium isobar have 20 protons and 20 neutron in their nucleus.
( p= protons, n=neutron)
Atomic mass= P + n
= 20+20
=40
Argon- 4018Ar :
Argon isobar have 18 protons and 22 neutron in their nucleus .
( p= protons, n=neutron)
Atomic mass= P + n
= 18+22
=40
Sulphur- 4016S:
Sulphur isobar have 16 protons and 24 neutron in their nucleus .
( p= protons, n=neutron)
Atomic mass= P + n
= 16+24
=40
Potassium- 4019K:
Potassium isobar have 19 protons and 21 neutron in their nucleus .
( p= protons, n=neutron)
Atomic mass= P + n
= 19+21
=40
Chlorine- 4017Cl :
Chlorine isobar have 17 protons and 23 neutron in their nucleus .
( p= protons, n=neutron)
Atomic mass= P + n
= 17+23
=40
Characteristics of isobar:
- Isobar are different elements which have same number of atomic mass but different atomic number.
- Different chemical properties:
Isobar are chemically different each other. Because they have different electronic configuration and hence different number of valence electron so the chemical properties depends on valence electron. Therefore they have different chemical properties.
- Same Physical properties:
Isobar are same in physical properties because they have same mass.
