Full form of CBI : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is a government agency under the Union Ministry of Law and Justice in India that investigates cases involving corruption, other economic crimes, and crimes against humanity. It has also been used to investigate crimes relating to terrorism, especially those involving either foreign countries or separatist movements within India. The CBI is headed by a Director-General appointed by the Prime Minister of India. The Director-General reports to the Home Secretary, who is accountable to the Home Ministry. The CBI is an autonomous body under the control of the Ministry of Law and Justice.[1] The CBI derives its powers from Section 14(1) of the Evidence Act and Sections 32 & 34 of Indian Penal Code.The CBI was established on 1 April 1968 as an independent bureau reporting directly to the Government of India.It has its head office at 11 Dr. Zakir Hussain Marg, New Delhi .The bureau’s responsibilities include investigation into offences under IPC; Prevention of Corruption Act (1988); Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act (1981); Prevention thereof: And for matters connected therewith or ancillary thereto. It has more than 10,000 employees working under it in various cities throughout the country.The CBI became a major player in India’s fight against terrorism after its Special Cell was established to deal with terror attacks and other threats to national security. In addition to investigating cases related to terrorism and espionage, it also has jurisdiction over corruption, narcotics and private detectives.The current DG is Alok Verma, appointed on 8 September 2018.
Eligibility criteria for joining CBI
- Candidates who have passed from the qualifying exams like PG, DEO, DSP, DIG etc may apply for the post of CBI. The age limit for applying for this post is 21 years old.
- Candidates with experience in crime investigation or forensic science can also apply for this post.
- The candidates must have completed their education from a University or an Institution recognized by the government or an equivalent qualification from any other university or institute.
- The candidate must have cleared the Public Service Commission (PSC) examination and have passed it with at least minimum qualifying marks.
