The discovery of machine makes life simple and faster. Machine reduces human efforts. How does machine work? It works on energy which provided to it, so energy is most important for machine to operate it. Electric bulb gives light energy to us in night. Bulb use electric energy for producing light. What is the source of this electrical energy. Where do such devices get energy. There are so many sources of energy. These sources are classified as.
Conventional energy sources:
From ancient time we use wood as a source of energy to produce heat. After knowing the high calorific value of coal makes industrial revolution. We are using petroleum fuels for vehicles and industrial use. We use LPG and CNG as a fuel in your house for cooking. The energy dependence of India is as shown in the pie chart as follows.
The pie chart shows that coal is most used energy source in India. With coal we also use petroleum and natural gas as a source of energy. But these are reserve. Such energy sources are considered as conventional energy sources. It has some characteristics as
- It is used from long time to produce energy in household and industrial purpose
- Stock of continuous energy sources is limited.
- We cannot reuse this sources.
- It takes thousand of years to create conventional energy sources.
- It will created from decomposition of animals and plants part.
Burning of this type of energy sources produces much pollutants in atmosphere. These pollutants are responsible for global warming.
- Combustion of petroleum in vehicles produces carbon dioxide, sulphur monoxideetc so it affects on ozone layer.
- Burning of coalproduces oxides of nitrogen.
- These pollutants lead acid rain and we know the side effect of acid rain on soil and water as discussed in class 9th.
Such type of energy sources increase the level of pollution. To overcome this problem we have to use other type of energy sources in domestic as well as industrial purpose.
Answer the following questions
- State the examples of energy sources at your household use.
- Give the side effects of conventional energy sources.
