Case Study 1:
Sameer arranged a vacation to Thailand with his children during their holidays. They were all excited to go scuba diving on the Coral Islands. Sameer dived 43 feet to reach the brain coral upon the directions of his instructor. He then rose by 18 feet to reach an underwater cave.
(1) What is the depth of the underwater cave?
(a) 18 feet
(b) 61 feet
(c) 25 feet
(d) 43 feet
Ans: (c) Depth of the underwater cave = (-43 + 18) feet = (-25) feet.
Thus, the depth of the underwater cave is 25 feet (below sea level).
(2) Sameer again dived 56 feet to reach the base of the reef. What is the depth of the reef?
(a) 56 feet
(b) 74 feet
(c) 99 feet
(d) 81 feet
Ans: (d) Sameer’s position (when he was at the underwater cave) = (-25) feet.
He dived further down by 56 feet to reach the base of the reef.
Location of the base of the reef = (-25 – 56) feet = (-81) feet.
Thus, the depth of the reef is 81 feet (below sea level).
(3) From the base of the reef, Sameer ascended 29 feet and reached a ridge. How deep is the ridge with respect to sea level?
(a) 52 feet
(b) 110 feet
(c) 85 feet
(d) 95 feet
Ans: Sameer’s position (when he was at the base of the reef) = (-81) feet.
He ascended 29 feet to reach the ridge.
Location of the ridge = (-81 + 29) feet = (-52) feet.
So, the location of the ridge is 52 feet (below sea level).
(4) A whale passed at a depth of 23 feet from the sea level. How far was the whale from the ridge?
(a) 23 feet
(b) 81 feet
(c) 29 feet
(d) 52 feet
Ans: (c) Sameer’s location (at the ridge) = (-52) feet.
Whale’s location = (-23) feet.
Distance of the whale from the ridge = {-23 – (52)} feet = (- 23 + 52) feet = 29 feet.
