a.) Who had established the Ahom kingdom in Assam and when?
Ans. The Ahoms migrated to Assam in1228 A.D. and their reign continued till 600 years from 13th century to the first two decades of the 19th century. Sukapha was the founder of the Ahom dynasty about 784 years ago. Sukapha who came from the Mawlang kingdom through Munkong crossed the Patkai hills and entered Assam. He faced many challenges and restraints from the local people but he established his capital at Charideo in 1253 A.D. after intelligently subjugating the people under him. He subjugated the two tribes like Moran and Borahi through marital relationships who controlled the area between the Disang and Dikhow rivers. Sukapha was a very intelligent, shrewd, brave and valiant warrior and reigned for 36 years and died in 1268 A.D.
b.) Between which two powers was the battle of Saraighat fought? What was the outcome?
Ans. The battle of Saraighat was fought between the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and the Ahoms in 1671. The Mughal emperor sent Ram Singh to take control over the Ahoms who fought under the charge of Lachit Borphukan who defeated the Mughals and returned the glory of their motherland.
c.) Who was Bir Chilarai? Which kingdom did he conquer?
Ans. Bir Chilarai was the brilliant and courageous general of the Koch King Naranarayan. Biswa Singha’s eldest son Malladev who became the king after the death of his father and assumed the name Naranarayan appointed his younger brother Shukladdwaj as his general who came to be known popularly as Bir Chilarai. Bir Chilarai attacked areas like the states of Kachari, Manipur, Jayantia, Tripura, Kharam, Dimarua, Srihatta etc. He also invaded the Gaud Kingdom.
d.) Who were the Baro Bhuyans?
Ans.The word Bhuyan mean the landlord. The Bhuyans of Assam were the Kayasthas, Daivagyas and Brahmins. There are many accounts about the rise of the Baro Bhuyans. As per some accounts the Baro Bhuyans were the wealthy and powerful landlords who decided not to pay taxes to the Kings and decided to declare themselves as the Lords of their lands. They were the independent chiefs of Kamrup and started to acknowledge themselves as kings. The Baro Bhuyans became powerful with the decline of the weak kings of Kamrup. They were defeated by the Ahom Kings in the middle of the 16th century and were offered important positions in the Ahom administration.

Ans. The Kacharis were the ethnic clan of Assam. According to the historians ancient Kamrup was under the rule of Kacharis and the kingdom was extended from Sylhet to Mymensingh of modern Bangladesh and to the seas. The tribes like Garo, Koch, Rabha, Chutia, Tripuri, Saraniya, Lalung and Dimasa were of Kachari region. With time these people migrated towards different parts of the land and new culture was created and slowly they came to be known as Bodo Kachari, Mech, Dimasa, Garo, Hajong, Saraniya, Sonowal etc.
