a.) Is consumer awareness necessary? Give two reasons to support your answer.
Ans. Yes, consumer awareness is necessary. Consumer awareness means that the consumer knows all details about the items bought and he has the knowledge of the protection from exploitation, fraud etc. The consumer needs to be empowered and he should be aware of the products that is on sale in the market so that he is capable of making right choice.
b.) What are the various methods of cheating consumers?
Ans.The various methods of cheating consumers are as follows:
i.) By not weighing properly the commodities.
ii.) By selling adulterated commodities.
iii.) By providing low quality commodities and services.
iv.) By not issuing receipt and mentioning correct amount of sol goods and services.
v.) By pasting new and increased price tags on original price.
vi.) By duplicating trade marks and duplicating commodities of branded companies.
vii). By not delivering goods on time ordered through postal, telephone and internet.
c.) What are your duties as a consumer? What things would you look into while buying things?
Ans. As a consumer our duties are to be a responsible and conscious customer and filling complains only of the original grievances along-with being conscious of the rights provided by the government to maintain a manageable and secured economic system. Things that a consumer must remember while buying things are as follows: always remember to take the receipt of the items bought, stay alert of the overemphasized advertisements, be aware of the quality of the items bought for example to check the expiry date of the medicine and perishable items, MRP, identify the trademarks like AGMARK, ISI, HALLMARK, FPO provided by the government on particular items
d.) What is consumer right? Briefly discuss some consumer rights.
Ans. The rights of the consumer are the right to be informed, right to safety, the right to choose and right to be heard. The rights are provisions created by the government to ensure the consumer’s protection and welfare. Some of the rights are Rights to speak on price, weight, purity, quality on goods, to form consumer forum for consumer’s rights, demand punishment against the fraud merchants and sellers, Right to consumer education.
e.) Briefly discuss about the measures taken by government for consumer protection.
Ans. The government has provided certain provisions for the protection, safety and welfare of the consumers. The government has made provisions of some rights like Rights to speak on price, weight, purity, quality on goods, to form consumer forum for consumer’s rights, demand punishment against the fraud merchants and sellers, Right to consumer education etc for the protection and welfare of the consumers. The government has also enacted the consumer protection act in 2019 in India from August 2019.The act protects the consumer in different cases by resolving various types of objections of the customer in correct time period and manner. The act also provides the formation of Advisory councils at the Central, State and district levels with the name of “Consumer Protection Council” which provides advice on consumer rights and dispute resolution. Under this act, the government has also formed ‘Central Consumer Protection Authority’ to provide the rights of the consumer and ensure safety from various cheating. The amount of fine can go up to10 lakhs as fine imposed by the central authority against fake advertisements. Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has been formed at national, state and district level to protect and safeguard the rights of the consumer.
