14.) What were the arguments put forth by the prisoner for not going out of the prison in ‘Too Dear’?
Answer: The king called a meeting of his ministers and instructed them to look for a cheaper way to punish the criminal after realising that it would be costly to keep a criminal in prison forever and that it would put a significant financial burden on his people. Following some discussion, the ministers recommended that the guard be fired in order to save money. The king accepted their recommendation. The guard was soon let go, and everyone waited impatiently to see what the criminal would do. When it was time for dinner, the prisoner emerged from his cell, obtained his food from the royal kitchen, and then went back to the cell, locked the door, and remained there. Later, when there was no guard watching him, the justice minister questioned him as to why he had not fled. Even worse, they assured him that the prince wouldn’t care if he fled. The prisoner, however, claimed that he had nowhere to go because his reputation had been tarnished and people would no longer trust him. Additionally, he had lost the habit of working, and if he fled, he would be left with little choices but to figure out how to support himself.
15.) How does Rabindranath Tagore highlight the importance of forest according to Vandana Shiva?
Answer:
Rabindra Nath Tagore asserts that the forest was a source of beauty and joy, art and aesthetics, harmony, and perfection in addition to knowledge and freedom. It served as a universal symbol. Tagore claims in his essay “Tapovan” that the Indian civilisation is unique in that it finds its source of renewal, both material and intellectual, in the forests rather than the towns. It also says that Indians have developed their best ideas away from crowded towns, when interacting with woods, rivers, and lakes. The tranquilly and quiet of the woodlands in Irad contributed to the intellectual development of humanity. In the past, Indian saints and sages would spend a lot of time in the forests meditating in order to find inspiration. The Indian sages Valmiki and Vyasa were inspired to write the Ramayana and the epic “Mahabharata” respectively by the tranquilly and serenity of the forests as well as the vibrant biodiversity of the forests. Even today, these writings are still important. We Indians continue to worship natural creatures like snakes, trees, and the Gods and Goddesses of the Sun and Moon.

17.) Why does Tammanna feel that human nature can be strange?
Answer: Tammanna feels that although while man requires wealth, knowledge, and a host of other things, these things do not provide him with a compelling reason to live. “Man lives for some kind of unbearable vengefulness,” he said. Based on his own life experience, he draws this conclusion. Basavaiah had regarded him as his adversary while he was still living in his village and had continued to make efforts to outperform him in terms of riches, health, creativity, and other factors. He had enough motivation to live simply because he had a rival and had to work hard to compete with him in every way. Here is where one finds human nature strange.
18.) Bring out the contrast between illusion and reality in ‘To the Foot from its Child’.
Answer: Pablo Neruda uses the metaphor of the foot to express his perspective on life. He travels through life as a foot that starts out as a child’s foot, develops into an adult foot, and then eventually dies. The poet attempts to describe how man’s “dreams” are crushed in the world by external forces as he travels through this cycle of life and death. The infant’s foot initially has no idea that it is a “foot,” thinking instead that it can fly like a butterfly or be an apple on a tree. The same baby’s foot then understands that it can only be a “foot” and cannot be a fruit or fly like a butterfly. The truth is what it is. As a result, the infant’s mind loses its illusions once it enters society and becomes aware of reality.
19.) ‘A poet’s task is to discover metaphors.’ How does Borges explain this in ‘Books will never Disappear’?
Answer: When discussing metaphors, Borges claims that they have existed forever. He appears to limit all metaphors to only five or six that are fundamental ones. Time and a river, life and aspirations, passing away and sleep, stars and eyes, flowers and ladies are some of them. He believes that the poet’s job is to find metaphors.
20.) What makes Mikes feel that the drivers in Brazil are on look-out for pedestrians?
Answer: Mikes believes that Brazilian drivers are alert for pedestrians because they immediately appear to view them as fair game, taking aim and accelerating their vehicles the moment they see a person step off the pavement. In order to save his or her life, the pedestrian must jump, leap, and flee.
21.) Bring out the nature of freedom gained in Pudukottai with the introduction of cycle.
Answer: For rural women, cycling is the path to development. It gives girls the freedom to work for themselves and independently of men. Women don’t have to travel far to obtain water. They don’t need to wait for public transportation because they can deliver their goods to the market quickly. Additionally, students do not need to wait for the bus. They can go extremely effortlessly on bicycles. It also gives women a sense of self-respect.
22.) Give an account of the humiliation and craving felt in the poem, ‘Water’.
Answer: The poem “Water” describes the excruciating humiliation and misery brought on by the upper caste’s societal limitations on the Dalits, or untouchables. It was only natural that she would become wet. The speaker claims that only “water” is aware of the girl’s shame.
III.) Answer the following in about 200 words.
23.) ‘Heaven is creation of one’s own mind.’ Explain with reference to ‘Heaven, If you are not on Earth’.
Answer: Here, the poet makes an effort to explain how we conceptualise heaven. The poet realises the beautiful feeling of being in nature’s presence on earth while in that delightful mood. He expresses his feelings to the audience. He sees the beauty of God’s creation to be so all-pervasive that he is unable to cease praising it. In this situation, Kuvempu ponders: If Heaven is not on Earth, then where else could it be? He discovers that our inner perception of God is really an extension of our excellent traits. There cannot be any Gods if we do not embrace these values. The most stunning heavenly maids are all around us and inside. Such nymphs must be here and now if we can see them; otherwise, they must be elsewhere. The poet’s imagination is so permanently influenced by nature’s works that the roaring torrent, crashing seas, and lush gardens all appear gold in the soft sunlight. The poet beautifully depicts the splendour of harvest in the moonlight that blankets the soil and transforms it into heaven! The high priest of nature, Kuvempu, is overwhelmed by this blissful heavenly experience. Only someone who is completely immersed in this experience can build heaven on earth, as the poet correctly points out. This poetry is lovely and enjoyable.

Bring out the changes in Gonzalo’s attitude before and after occupying the bench in the park.
Answer: As soon as Don Gonzalo and Juanito enter the park, he notices that his favourite seat has been taken by three priests. He expresses annoyance and makes a harsh remark, adding that the priests should have been saying mass in the church instead of wasting their time. Don Gonzalo then tells Juanito that he wants a bench to himself and declines Juanito’s suggestion that he sit on the bench where Dona Laura was. Juanito then tells him there isn’t another bench available. The bench where Don Gonzalo normally sat is indicated by his finger. When Juanito alerts him to the presence of three priests on the bench, Don requests that he eject them. Later, he makes a nasty remark, adding that the priests appeared to be stuck to their seats. Then he moves along with his servant in the direction of where the birds are gathering bread crumbs to eat. Don asks Laura whether she was speaking to him when Dona Laura yells at him to look out. He responds angrily that he doesn’t care about the birds when she later complains that he scared the birds away. However, she makes him feel terrible by telling him that she looked after the birds. However, he aggressively reminds her that it is a public park, implying that she was wrong to object to him for frightening away birds in a public park. Dona challenges him by posing the question of why he had taken offence at the priests occupying his place. Don Gonzalo tries to avoid her because he feels uncomfortable by telling her that she shouldn’t have taken the initiative to address him because she is a stranger. Later, Don Gonzalo sits at the far end of the bench, putting on his spectacles and adjusting the lenses as he gets ready to read a book. Dona feels bad for him having to read while wearing so many spectacles.

Do you think that Roof is right in rearing the ballot paper into two? Explain.
Answer: The story’s main character, Roof, is an enthusiastic young guy from Umuofia who has returned to his hometown after forgoing a promising future in the city. People hold him in great regard because they think he has returned to help them during trying times. No one questioned Chief the Honourable Marcus Ibe’s re-election this time because the village of Umuofia already belonged en masse to the People’s Alliance Party and had chosen him as their representative in the previous election. Roof is the force behind Marcus’ achievement. As his election campaign manager, he had developed into a true expert in all facets of political campaigning. But as the story draws to a close, we discover that Roof is given five pounds by the head of the election campaign in exchange for a POP, provided Roof backs Maduka. Without any hesitation, a roof attempts to inform them that he works for Marcus. However, they assuage his concerns by informing him that Marcus won’t be present to witness him casting his ballot. In front of the ‘iyi,’ Roof accepts their offer and promises to support Maduka. Marcus wants to ensure that every member of his community casts a vote for him on election day.He therefore requests that Roof cast his ballot first. When Roof enters the booth, he is presented with a moral conundrum. His conscience warns him against betraying Marcus. He feels the need to hurry to the POP leader’s campaign manager and ask for his money back. He quickly changes his mind and folds the ballot in half after remembering that he had vowed to vote for Maduka in front of “iyi.”He splits it in half, placing one half in the box designated for Maduka and the other half in the box designated for Marcus. Additionally, he declares out loud, “I vote for Maduka,” before leaving joyfully. His vote is void as a result of Roof cutting the ballot in two. It is obvious when someone tears it in half that they haven’t selected anyone at all, even if they may have placed the two pieces of the paper in different containers. The only reason Roof breaks the ballot in half is to get out of the moral pickle he finds himself in, not so that he can exercise his right to vote. He has not necessarily voted in favour of both if he places two halves in two different boxes. Actually, the vote was not legitimate. This is unacceptable and goes against the spirit of the elections.

A survey was conducted on the use of chemical fertilisers and organic manure per acre from 1951 to 2001. The findings of the survey have been represented in the following bar chart. Using the information, write a report in about 120 words.
Answer: The use of chemical fertilisers and organic manure during a 50-year period from 1951 to 2001 is studied in an intriguing bar chart. It’s interesting that chemical fertilisers go through a whole cycle since if their consumption was 70 kg per acre in 1951, it was the same in 2001. Nevertheless, the use of chemical fertilisers decreased gradually, reaching an all-time low of 30 kilos per acre in 1981. Nevertheless, it started to increase again, reaching a peak of 60 kilos per acre in 1991 until ultimately returning to the original value of 70 kilogrammes per acre in 2001. The same narrative applies to organic manure, but in the opposite chronological order.
